His Presence is Our Present

“You make known to me the path of life; you fill me with joy in YOUR PRESENCE, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Psalm 16:11 (NIV)

“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of YOUR PRESENCE, Oh Lord.” Psalm 89:15 (NIV)

As I sit here striving to put my thoughts down onto paper, I am trying to picture my Heavenly Father sitting across the table cheering me on. To be honest, today has been a hard day. People can be a bit rude during the holiday season. Everyone is hurrying and scurrying around trying to get shopping done and trying to make sure everything is just right for Christmas day.  I, too, caught myself getting a bit annoyed while waiting in lines and trying to weave my way through bumper to bumper traffic.  It’s so very easy to focus on the task at hand and forget the people and purpose of the Christmas season.

And then, I remembered these two verses that I have been pondering for a few weeks:

“… You fill me with joy in Your Presence…” Psalm 16:11

“Blessed are those who have learned to praise you, who walk in light of Your Presence, Oh Lord.” Psalm 89:15

It was at that moment that I took a deep breath and stopped and quietly asked the Lord to fill me with Joy in His Presence.

Have you ever been in the presence of someone famous or highly important? How did you respond? How did their presence change the way you acted or talked or responded?

I remember several years back when I was privileged to go and speak on a Mother/Daughter cruise. There were numerous other speakers on that fun cruise, but one I remember in particular was Lisa Whelchel. (Better known as Blair from Facts of Life)

Growing up, Facts of Life was one of my all time favorite TV shows and I’ll admit, I was a little star struck when I found myself playing on a volleyball team with “Blair.”

I wanted to do my best and not “look” like I was star struck.

Isn’t it funny how the “presence” of someone important can change our actions, our words, or even the way we would normally respond in a situation?

So, I began to ask myself, “How does walking in light of the Lord’s Presence change the way I respond and see the world? How does being daily in the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords change me? How does acknowledging His Presence change the way I respond to my family and the many people I encounter on a daily basis?”  Oh how blessed we are to be able to “Walk in light of your Presence, Lord!”

This Christmas Season, my heart has been challenged to “Practice His Presence” as I go about my daily routine.  As I am learning to focus more on His Presence and not the presents, I am truly reminded that things and parties and decorations are not what Christmas is all about.

As I seek to “Practice His Presence,” I am learning to take time and see people and life through His eyes. He has shown me so many hurting people that just need a hug or a reminder that He is their Hope.  His Presence is a reminder to slow down and continually point my son to HIS PRESENCE and the true meaning of Christmas.

Mommas, let’s seek to remember Psalm 89:15 as we go about this Christmas Season. “Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in light of your presence, Lord.”  (I love that we are all learning, don’t you?)

May we seek to learn to “walk in light of His Presence” allowing Him to “fill us with Joy in His Presence” this Christmas Season.

May we learn to talk to Him about any and every situation. (Especially during our crazy schedules and family gatherings.)

May we sing our Christmas Carols with our kids acknowledging HIS PRESENCE and reminding them that He is the reason we sing!

May we acknowledge His Presence as we read the Christmas Story to our children helping them remember that “His Presence” is “Our Present.’

Oh the beauty and joy that comes from being in His Presence.

May we all rejoice together this Christmas season, praising Him that HIS PRESENCE is OUR PRESENT!

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!
