Sharpening God’s Arrows

by Stephanie Blackiston

When my husband and I got married in January of 2002, we had no idea what God had in store for us.

1 Corinthians 2:9 is my life verse because my mind could have never imagined the plans God had for me!

Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.

We never talked about having children before we were married. I thought we were supposed to travel and have fun for at least 5 years before thinking of having children!

When we were on our honeymoon, I was overwhelmed with the gift of my godly husband. I was thanking God, and saying “Why have you given me this gift I don’t deserve?”

I opened my Bible and just happened to be in Malachi that morning.

Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one?
Because He was seeking Godly offspring.
Malachi 2:15

I quickly began to realize that God had much bigger plans for our marriage than watching movies and traveling!

That verse burned a hole in my heart. I knew God was speaking to me. I believe it was in that moment He gave me the heart of a mother.

Fifteen years later, we are expecting our 8th precious child!

God has called my husband and I so far out of the boat, we want to get back in it but we can’t find it! J Our only choice now is to continue to walk on water with our eyes fixed on the author and finisher of our faith.

We aren’t called to be perfect parents but we are called to be “diligent”.

“You shall teach {the Word} diligently to your children” (Deut 6:7).

There is no formula to raising godly children.

The formula is realizing there is no formula and being completely dependent on Christ in you!

However, we must faithfully teach our children God’s Word and ask God to pour His Spirit out on them.

And I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants,
and my blessing on your children.
They will thrive like watered grass,
like willows on a riverbank.
Isaiah 44:3-4

No matter how you choose to educate your children, keep God’s Word at the center!

Jesus Christ has given us understanding so we can know Him!

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him.
1 John 5:20

The kids and I memorize verses together. When they are little, it is more like teaching wild monkeys but we do it anyway! The soil of their hearts is most fertile when they are young.

It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
Isaiah 55:11

I rarely use devotionals. I want them to crave the pure milk of the Word and be able to recognize something that isn’t.

I have God’s Word written all over our house, literally over the doorposts.

I have watched God’s Word produce life in the hearts of my children. Our older five prayed to receive Christ very young.

He chose to give us birth through the Word of truth.
James 1:18

I’ve watched God’s Word bring supernatural healing into our family.

He sent out His Word and healed them.
Psalm 107:20

The Word “thoroughly equips” our children for all God is calling them to do!

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Word gives them power over the enemy.

I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
1 John 2:14

I have set my face like flint, determined to teach my kids God’s Word. That is my top priority and greatest joy (3 John 1:4).

May God give us a renewed passion to teach His Word to our children!

We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and His mighty wonders.
Psalm 78:4
