Have you ever questioned whether or not God cares about you? Does He care that your husband has decided to leave you? Does He care that you lost one of the greatest gifts ever given you due to a miscarriage? Does He care that you only have $32 in your checking account? Does He care that your mother is suffering with cancer?
Over the past several years, since my husband’s diagnosis, there have been many times when I have questioned whether or not God cared about me. He has answered my question in amazing ways and always with a resounding YES! I want to share with you the most recent time in hopes that if you are in a place of questioning, God will use it to remind you that without a doubt – HE CARES!
A few years ago, we started Pop and Mimi Back-to-School Camp with our grandchildren who live in town. Last year, I chose the theme of Salt and Light. So, this year it was Mark’s (Pop) turn. When I asked him what he thought our theme should be, without hesitation he said, “Be Strong and Courageous.” I responded with, “I like that a lot. That will be a great theme to plan our camp around.” Quite honestly the word camp is a little misleading. We do not sleep out under the stars or even in a tent – not in the month of August in the South! We love air conditioning too much! Sleepover might have been a better choice – especially with four – they sleep all over the house! At any rate it is 24 hours of fun!
The Monday prior to having the children our daughter called to check in with us. I decided to share with her our theme and plans for our time with the children. As I told her the theme, “Be Strong and Courageous,” there was silence on the other end. I asked, “Is that alright?” She responded, “Mom, I’m going to cry.” I began to recount my words wondering what I had said that would upset her. I asked, “Why?” To which she responded, “Last night we were reading the Bible before the children went to bed. We came to Joshua 1:9, ‘This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ (NLT) I told the kids that this verse was going to be our theme verse for the coming school year. I had no idea you and dad had chosen the same verse.” We were both in awe of a God who cares! He cared so much about the faith of four children that He laid the same verse on Angela and her dad’s heart.
I asked her not to tell the children about this “I Care” gift from God. I wanted to share this little miracle with them myself. Walking in the door that afternoon they took notice of the sign hung over the window, “Be Strong! Be Courageous! God is with You! 2015-16. As we sat around the table, I told them how God had given our theme verse to Pop and then a week later He had given the very same verse to their mom. Their eyes got as big as saucers! I told them that God loved and cared for them so much that He planted the words He desired to use to encourage them for the coming year in the heart of their Pop and mom.
Now, some of you might be saying, “That was a coincidence.” No! It was not! It was my God reminding me that He Cares – even about the smallest details of my life. He cares about our grandchildren and our daughter, and desires to stretch their faith through even the smallest of miracles. I could tell you story after story of the many times God has reminded me that He Cares. I am not alone, He’s got it! I have nothing to fear!
